Essay Competition for Software Freedom Day

Courtesy: http://cis-india.org/advocacy/floss/software-freedom-day/competition-blog/essay-competition-for-software-freedom-day

I met Sunil of CIS India last Saturday in RVCE college during Software Freedom day celebrations.

The Free Software Users Group of Bangalore and the Centre for Internet and Society in collaboration organise an essay competition for schools and colleges in Bangalore on the topic of "Software Freedom"

Last month, we hosted a meeting of the Free Software User Group - Bangalore at the CIS office. During the meeting, Prof. Renuka Prasad from RV College of Engineering proposed an essay competition for college and school students from Bangalore on the occasion of Software Freedom Day. Since this was good opportunity to CIS to be involved in grass-root level advocacy I readily agreed on behalf of the Centre.

Click here to learn more about this competition. You can also download the poster and an electronic copy of the covering letter that was sent to 300 schools and colleges in Bangalore.

Prof Renuka Prasad consolidated the database and Anivar Aravind from Moving Republic provided lots of useful and timely advise. Hiran Venugopalan volunteered to design the poster. He used the free software applications of Gimp and Inkscape to design the poster. For those curious the background of the poster has the first 3 lines from the famous poem "My country awake" by Rabindranath Tagore.

Silverlight 2 Release Candidate 0

Source: Mrinal

Microsoft just released Silverlight 2 RC0, which is a development release to help developers prepare their apps for Silverlight 2. They’ve not released an end-user runtime for this version since the release candidate is targeted at helping developers prepare their Silverlight 2 Beta 2 apps for the Silverlight 2 release. You can get the developer runtime and updates for Visual Studio Silverlight tools and Expression Blend here.

Looks like they moved around lot of stuff, so there are several breaking changes. You can download a detailed document about the changes here. Mike Snow also has a detailed post describing the changes.

Some of my dreams came into reality!!!!

Last Saturday 20th Sep and 21st Sunday I went to Koorg along with my teammates Engage.
I missed one of long waiting session "Embedded systems" but I thought I have to take some fresh air.
We stayed in an Estate  saw elephant , rafting across cauveri , a sight seeing place ,good food , then Cauveri sangamam ..we walked along the river.(really I enjoyed this especially)its like an adventure , then Mysore palace in lights ..

I came back on Sunday night 1 pm

Then I got mail that I have to prepare for Chennai consulate for B1.
For the first time I felft that my company thought I am worthful .
I was fully tensed.

Y becoz I kept a vow that I shouldnt travel by flight until a business need.
I am alone and went to Chennai on a Kingfisher (actually Deccan) , staying in  3 star , standing in the line at consulate at Gemini fly over, successfully getting visa, coming back on flight ... oh God how much time u made me to wait for this.

I starred at the same line from the same fly over 5 yrs back for my turn when I use to pass through by a bus ...
Finally I was in the line.

After coming back another news that I am not going and was assigned in another project ..

OK  still waiting.. Still some more tests to face ..

Atleast first flight , line before consulate , words like security check in , boarding pass, coming back from Bangalore Airport on a A/C Volvo bus..

These are silly things but for me these are precious..I can afford flight ticket but thats not my intention all these 5 yrs.

Y becoz company felt that I am adding value to them.

I am not going this time ...but I am ok .

Last year left offer from Singapore onsite for Proteans.
Poured water on my MS hopes after my engineering

May be for this oppurtunity it happened like that.

Again I was in .net 3.5 project..

I noticed these changes in Chennai:
people speaking Hindi. Good change.
Temperature : As usual hot
Beauty:  Its hard to see a nice looking girl.
People Nature :Still they will seperate other states. But my best friends are from Chennai.
Traffic : More better than Bangalore and cheap fares. But food cost increased

What to speak in consulate when u r going for business purpose

Business proposal
Training
Participate in business discussions to initiate the new phase of the development
Participate in training in order to understand needs of product development

They have a customer base of 3000 - 4000 [domain name ] related institutions. [Client company name ] provides [domain] services.
They invited {our company name} for training on their product to understand their client usage pattern and to discuss the road map for the next few years of the product.
We will get some use cases

Dont tell enhancements in US consulate.
Just tell understand their product and may prepare  better solutions.

Why u?
-----------
I have similar exposure in the domain. My company feels that I am having the right exposure to this product.

Who is a customer?

A customer is the most important visitor on our premises.

He is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him.

He is not an interruption in our work - he is the purpose of it.

We are not doing him a favour by serving him. He is doing us a favour by giving us the opportunity to serve him.

How Big Can You Think -- Yahoo

On 10th Sep at 3 pm I went to Leela Palace for Yahoo's How Big Can You Think series session on "Six Degrees -- The Science of A connected Age".Taken by Duncan Watts (Principal Research Scientist Yahoo Research)
Nearly 200+ folk gathered.(Some 20+ ceo's , 20+ students, 10+ media and remaining are developers)
2 hr session including Q&A.
Full waste.
After hearing that (even in Yahoo Hack Day) I understood why Yahoo is lagging behind in the race.
No fresh research.Old fellows with old ideas.Reinventing the same.
No fresh thoughts and they cant move from that also.
Its better to sell their business to someone.

Yahaoo people have to think again before taking sessions.
They spend 2 lakhs roughly for that session but taken 20 lakhs from other companies by attending their session.
200 people multiply by 2 hrs = 400 man hrs (atleast 3k from each per hour).

Damn waste.
